Our Yoga: Almost all yoga in the U.S. is really hatha yoga. The other names are simply descriptive of the teacher’s styles and style of movement. True yoga also involves other practices such as pranayama (breathing practices), yamas and niyamas – how you treat yourself and others (the philosophy of yoga), pratyahara – withdrawal of the senses from the outside world, and different levels of concentration and meditation. Hatha yoga is the physical yoga postures – the exercise of the body with attention on expanding awareness of the body, breathing and mental activity. The word for a posture is "asana".

Ashtanga Yoga
This is the preferred sequence for classes - we do a traditional style class on Thursday mornings and use the strength building and therapeutic sequence for other classes - all classes are designed according to description and your level of practice - I always will modify for anybody.
Our Thursday morning class is a challenging yoga asana practice that aligns, strengthens and detoxifies the body. The series is always the same, however, students are expected to stop and rest when they need to throughout the practice. It takes time to learn the entire series - if you enjoy a challenge and can listen to your body, you can participate in this class. (leave the ego at home). NOT suitable for Beginners to Yoga!! BUT suitable for ANY ONE! Read more about this style,..

Slow Yoga - Begins first Wednesday of February 5:40 to 6:40 pm - you MUST sign up for all 4 classes to attend $60
Pre-registered students only - this is in my home studio and space is limited!
FOR all Levels -In slow yoga we slow down, move through yoga postures designed to give your body strength, flexibility and vibrant health as well as unwinding that inner tightness we all get from that thing called Life.
Beginners - You have no idea what's going to happen. You are brand new to yoga. No problem! Let me know and I will be happy to give you the extra assistance you will need in the beginning - discreetly! A beginners greatest fear is to do something wrong where everyone will see - or not being able to do something EVERYONE else can do. We have all been there. However, in my 13 years of teaching yoga, I haven't seen anyone do something stupid or wrong. You'll feel right at home very quickly. If you are really self conscious - I highly recommend my introduction to yoga private session (only $75 in my studio). Write me for info on that. karen4yogaprairie@gmail.com
Level 1 - This is for those who have taken yoga before or those who have just completed Yoga Basics for Beginners. Students are expected to work at their own level and to listen to your body. Here's a list of level 1 poses on About.com
Level 2 - You have the poses down, now you want to work on gaining more strength, flexibility, vitality, awareness. Level 2 classes can help you to maintain the gains you have achieved in Level 1-2 and take you to where you want to go next.
Level 3 - This is very similar to Level 2 class, but we now introduce inverted postures - preparatory work for doing shoulderstand, headstand, handstands. The inverted poses give you the most advantageous benefits of all of the yoga postures. This is worth working up to - where you will have gained some yoga skill!

Restorative Yoga
The ultimate relaxing experience! Yoga asana (postures) where you are supported by bolsters or blankets. This allows deep release of mental and physical tensions which in turn allow the body to restore its energy. No effort is involved. Class is suitable for anyone and especially helpful if you are going through any type of stress or recovery from injury. You will also do a guided breath meditation designed to increase your experience of being relaxed. Reiki will also be provided at the end of class during sivasana (final relaxation pose). You will feel energized and relaxed after this class.
Information Only....What is:
Vinyasa Yoga (or Slow Flow Vinyasa, or Gentle Vinyasa), or Bodacious Booty....
These yoga names - why are there so many styles of yoga? What is the difference?! All asana that has a focus on strength, flexibility and moving with the breath. Many yoga classes currently in yoga studios, health clubs or even parks are simply calisthenics or aerobics in the form of yoga shaped poses. If yoga does not include a focus on your breath, your attention and mindful movement, it is highly likely - and this is based on sound research - that you will get injured. If the teacher is not watching the students - it is highly likely that you will become injured in the class.
