ABOUT

Do what you love
Welcome! Yoga Prairie is now a private studio business owned by Karen Murray (formerly Kinnard), E-RYT
Located in small home studio in our loft,  -- teaching smaller group classes as well as coaching, reiki and continuing teacher education.  My goal is to give you the highest quality instruction possible and empower you in your exploration of real yoga.

Teaching yoga since 2002 (Coaching since 1995),  I directed the yoga teacher training program - a licensed Yoga School from 2006-2014.  Then from 2017-2020 the yoga school was licensed through Good Vibrations Yoga.

In my yoga classes, you will learn how to do yoga safely and receive instruction that will allow you to easily practice at home after a few lessons.    This is not fitness yoga - although it will help  you get more fit than you dreamed possible I highly recommend taking a minimum of 8 classes in order to be confident that you are practicing safely.  Many  students have been with me more than two years -  some over 12 years now! and each year continue to improve and grow in their own yoga practice and in life!  Your practice of Yoga gives many benefits:  mental peace, clarity, physical strength and flexibility as well as an improvement in the immune and metabolic functions of the body.   It is also a pain reliever.

What our community says about Yoga Prairie:
  • "I would like you to know that Yoga Prairie has become my physical, emotional and spiritual healing place.  The variety of classes are designed for the whole person.  I’ve never been to another yoga studio, so I’m not sure how your studio compares to others, but  I come to exercise my mind and soul as well as my body. Thanks for having such a fantastic environment for me to practice in." -Jeanne D.
  • Karen,  I just wanted to let you know how much I'm enjoying .... hatha class on Saturday mornings.  It's great! (When they say Hatha, all levels, they really mean it!") - Cathy J.

2021 - MORE ABOUT Karen Murray, E-RYT, B.S., C.N.T.
I am committed to providing my community with high quality yoga instruction, this means that I continue developing myself as a teacher through my own practice and taking classes from other teachers.  I have attended Ashtanga yoga primary series classes weekly and private sessions with Lynn Shuck, an Eischens Yoga master-teacher.  Over the past several years, we have helped many people recover from injuries and their own personal life tragedies.  We have provided happiness, peace and well-being in a troubled world.  Even in a privileged community such as Eden Prairie, there is suffering.  I hope to keep providing this oasis of peace well into the future here. - Karen

Yoga Prairie studio opened in 2008 with a vision to provide the highest quality yoga instruction available to our community in Eden Prairie and to become a place where everyone can find some peace and healing. The business was started with a dream and a loan guaranteed by my Uncle.  We built a studio in a retail shop near the mall.

Shortly after opening the studio, the recession hit us hard.  We borrowed, we worked hard to stay open.  By 2009, we were worried about being able to stay open - many students either had to go back to work in lower paying jobs or lost their jobs - everyone was cutting back.    In 2010, tragedy hit in the form of a bus knocking me off of my bicycle.  It took two years to recover from head, pelvis and neck injuries.

By 2012 the studio was in danger of closing due to back rent due.   I received an eviction notice and was fortunate to have our community of teachers and students rally and help us to bring in donations through a fundraiser/auction to convince the landlords to allow us more time to recover.  THANKS TO THE SUPPORT of our yoga community, we survived through it all and caught up on back rent.

In 2014 tragedy struck again with the death of my son Jacob, this time causing me to close the studio and rent space at Dance Esteem.  Change doesn't always bode well in business.  I needed to cut back on classes and the teachers & I parted ways - business wise, but not friendship wise. The experience of running a retail yoga business has taught me a lot:  that my work must be authentic (yoga should not be stressful), that perhaps the true essence of yoga does not belong in a retail business, it taught me how to hone my teaching, management, and marketing skills as well as what is truly MOST important in my life:  that is my family, my own well being and teaching yoga.  I feel I have arrived now at a lovely balance and it is reflected in my teaching.

I am committed to providing my community with high quality yoga instruction.  Over the past several years, we have helped many people recover from injuries and their own personal life tragedies.  We have provided happiness, peace and well-being in a troubled world.  Even in a privileged community such as Eden Prairie, there is suffering.  I hope to keep providing this oasis of peace well into the future here.

Update 2021 - as of 2020, we are all in the same boat aren't we?  COVID-19 Pandemic is a Global - universally traumatic event that just keeps going.  The face of yoga has changed for ever - it is now recognized as one of the best things you can do for exercise and mental health during trying times.  I have learned to let go of many students (who won't do zoom classes) and also to do a little bit better online classes.  It is a constant learning process but that's okay isn't it?  Yoga helps us to adapt to change just a little bit easier.  Join me for a class!  My schedule is here: https://goodvibrations-yoga.com.  I currently teach Yoga for Every Body (a gentle slow vinyasa class for all levels) and 50+ Strength and Yoga - essential yoga and strength work for those of us who are 50+.

Our style of yoga focuses on practicing with correct physical alignment (for your safety), and helping each student to achieve your goals for your practice.  Yoga is a practice that helps us to align with body, mind and spirit, and we encourage our students to become more aware of physical sensations, breathing, letting go of distracting thoughts, and aligning with your spiritual life - no matter what religion you practice, this can deepen your connection to your own personal inner life.

We invite you to visit us, practice yoga with us and to "Relax, Breath & Smile".   - Karen Murray
