                                                Class Descriptions

Below are descriptions of our yoga classes.  Reading this will help you to know what to expect when you sign up for a class here at Yoga Prairie.  One unique thing about our classes is that our class sizes are small.  Our teachers provide some of the best yoga instruction in the world and they have time to watch and assist each student in every class.  If you want to learn yoga, give our classes a try.  New students to the studio can try 3 classes for a discounted rate - but ask us where we think you would like to be.  We want to help you enroll in a class where you will enjoy your experience and get the most value for what you are looking for in a yoga class.

                                                Hatha Yoga

Almost all yoga in the U.S. is really hatha yoga.  The other names are simply descriptive of the teacher’s styles and style of movement.  True yoga also involves other practices such as pranayama (breathing practices), yamas and niyamas – how you treat yourself and others (the philosophy of yoga), pratyahara – withdrawal of the senses from the outside world, and different levels of concentration and meditation.  Hatha yoga is the physical yoga postures – the exercise of the body with attention on expanding awareness of the body, breathing and mental activity.  The word for a posture is "asana".

                                                Ashtanga Yoga - Primary Series

This is a challenging yoga asana practice that aligns, strengthens and detoxifies the body.  The series is always the same, however, students are expected to stop and rest when they need to throughout the practice.  It takes time to learn the entire series - if you enjoy a challenge and can listen to your body, you can participate in this class. (leave the ego at home).  Read more.,..

The work leads to strength, flexibility, and a greater flow of energy in the body and is highly individual. Lynn is a certified Eischens Yoga instructor

Next step after level 1 -  there are a few more difficult poses added.  Students must have developed strength and flexibility by this level and are ready to bring their practice internally and should also have a home practice

                                                Hips Class or other focus

From time to time we offer a series of 4 to 6 classes that will focus on a specific problem area common to many.  We explore poses that help with strength and flexibility in these areas.

                                                Karma Yoga

This is an opportunity for the student to serve our community studio by cleaning or doing some other task.  Karma yoga is service with a practice of non-attachment to results.  When serving others, we are serving God, in turn if you remain in the practice of giving with no thought of receiving, there are many rewards and benefits to this practice. Why do this?  Karen has practiced karma yoga for many years and over the years it has taught her patience, compassion for others, and true joy from making a difference for others.  Wednesdays at 11 am or pick a time that works for you to assist the studio

                                                Laughter Yoga

Laughter yoga is exercise and laughter.  Participants are guided through several laughing exercises that strengthen the body and lighten the mood.  This is the fastest growing yoga in the world because of its powerful healing affect on the mind and body.  And it is very very fun!  If you think it is weird, you are not alone, however, children who have 100 times more energy than adults also laugh more - - think about it – perhaps we have “learned” that we cannot act like a child anymore.  Break through your inhibitions, show up, relax and have a great time.   You will sweat.  No experience necessary.  This is a donation class.

                                                Prenatal Yoga

Classes focus on the specific needs of pregnant women. Classes incorporate postures, breathing, and dialogue about pregnancy, labor and childbirth. Through the community of yoga, women will find strength within and support from each other as they share the experience of pregnancy. Classes are appropriate for women at any stage of pregnancy and with any level of yoga experience.

                                                Restorative Yoga

Yoga asana (postures) where you are supported by bolsters or blankets.  This allows deep release of mental and physical tensions which in turn allow the body to restore its energy.  No effort is involved.  Class is suitable for anyone and especially helpful if you are going through any type of stress.
